On New Year’s Day, I found myself sitting in the emergency room at Toronto Western Hospital. I had a bladder infection, and the pain was so severe that I couldn’t wait till the next day to go to a walk-in clinic. Not exactly how I expected to spend my first day of 2010. If you’ve never had a bladder infection, may you never get one, it’s f****** horrible. Imagine the feeling of constantly needing to go pee, and the burning sensation when you do go pee. I’ve only been to the emergency dept. three times in my life. The first time was when I was five, I slid across the room hitting my forehead against the sharp edge of the wall cutting my forehead open. The second time was from a cat bite, yes, you read this right, I broke up a fight between my two cats which resulted in one of them biting me deeply in the arm. That one cost me a week in the hospital. Lesson: Next time you find yourself breaking up a cat fight, don’t. I guess all things do come in threes and hopefully, this is the last time I ever have to go to emergency. In these instances, and when I’m sick, believe it or not, I often think about how lucky I am. The pain I am experiencing is short-term and will go away with the right treatment. Our health is such a valuable thing, it’s shocking how many people don’t take care of themselves. If there is one resolution that I’ve made this year, it’s to give myself extra, special care. That means eating healthy, getting enough sleep, thinking positively, doing lots of yoga, meditating, and then giving myself the things I consider treats more often – massages, facials, osteo treatments.
Speaking of health, I’ve recently been hired to blog on Health and Wellness for That’s Fit, an AOL website dedicated to health and fitness. Check out my first blog of the year by clicking here!
