Getting ready to leave on a much needed vaca, I’m gone for 6 weeks traveling through the Philippines, volunteering at an elephant sanctuary in Thailand and doing some yoga in India!

I wrote an article last week on making new friends.  Making new friends is like um, living.  So, be open to it,  you never know what’s going to happen!

You know something else you should make friends with, your hips.  Treat your hips well so that when you’re old, they’ll treat you well.  Hip openers are all about letting go, check it.

Cheap Eats

I am sitting at a cafe downtown Hamilton. I escorted Matt to his med interview here in Hamilton, and I thought I’d take the time to go visit my friend Karen and her son Zoli who live in Ancaster while he was at his interview. It’s always interesting to be in a different place, it always breathes a different energy. What a great week it’s been. Matt and I have been doing lots of yoga this week at Yoga Therapy and eating lots of Korean food afterward. We are on a korean food kick, we even went grocery shopping at P.A.T. yesterday night – super awesome Korean grocery store. They have everything, and it’s cheap. We ended up having yellow bean stew and some vegetarian dumplings for breakfast this morning. Holy delicious!  We also have kimchi in the fridge and Matt is going to make some Chom Chi Chigae, which is a tuna stew.  Dirty, good.  If you’ve never been to Korea town, it is time to venture out, we said to ourselves last night that we could honestly eat korean food everyday, it’s so good and so cheap.  We ordered some Bibimbops and our  bill came to $14.  Ridiculous.

Speaking of cheap eats, here are my top 10 favorite cheap eats in the city under $10!

  1. Bibimbop in Korea town – you can basically hit any of the ma and pa shops and get bibimbops for $6-$8.
  2. Vietnamese Tofu Subs at Bahn Mi  – $1.75
  3. Doubles at Patty King  – $1.40
  4. Awesome Salad at Hibiscus – $7.00
  5. Awesome Crepes at Hibiscus – $5.00
  6. Soup at Prague Deli – $3.00
  7. Potatoes, Cabbage and Rapini platter at Alex Rei Dos Leitoes – $5.00
  8. Naan w/Cheese at Dufflet’s – $3.50
  9. Noodle Soup at King’s Noodles – $5.50
  10. Slice of pizza at Pizza Gigi – $3.50

My yoga girls are my yoga queens!

Posted in relationships, yoga on January 22, 2010 by michelleuy

Last night, I met up with my yoga girls. These are the gals that I did my yoga teacher training with back in 2006. They are the gals that I instantly connected with, who during our outings out for lunch, drinks, dance, would always make me feel real. Real as in talking about everything – boys, art, smoking, drinking, family, vaginas, babies, you name it, we’ve talked about. We’ve also laughed a heck of a lot, and we’ve been there to console one another during our lowest times. Last night was the very first time that all six of us were able to get together. In the past, there has always been someone who couldn’t make it, I was in awe that we finally made it happen. We’ve all grown so much over the last 4 years, yet we’ve managed to stay the same. I am in deep gratitude for my ladies, every gal needs a set of their own, no doubt.

Pain and tension in your body – it’s time to let it go. Read my article!

I will make this short and sweet. I am home from a long morning spent again in emergency (see New Year’s Day post). I had been there from 4:30-7am to treat another bladder infection. Apparently, the doctor told me that the previous doctor should have given me a stronger antibiotic that was taken over 7 days instead of 3 days. The result: my bladder infection came back after 2 weeks.

What is the universe trying to say? I find myself reflecting on what is happening and trying to read in between the lines.

My article came out this morning on That’s Fit: Yoga Practice Helps Us Become Better Listeners.

I’m listening universe, I really am.

I rocked out on my living room floor!

I just had a busy week getting organized for a pretty awesome month ahead. My yoga classes start again this week. Two programs that I am extremely proud of and excited to also start this week are my Yoga Thrive classes with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Association and the Eat Well Feel Well Program. I’ve been doing lots of work to prepare for this week and I can’t wait to get into it. So I found myself constantly moving from one task to the next and when I am excited to work on a project, I find that I have lots of energy. I couldn’t stay still and one particular evening I found I had to release it somehow. I was listening to music and decided to dance in my living room floor. I rocked out for about 10 minutes, and it felt so good! I got it all out of my system and I felt so happy afterwards. I was able to sit back down on my computer and work away for another few hours. Dancing does it for me all the time. Whether I need to release energy or make me feel better, dancing is my cure. If you’re feeling down as you read this, I wrote an article on That’s Fit today: 10 Ways To Get Out of Your Winter Blues – as you already know, dancing is one of the ten, find out the other nine!

p.s. I’m on the last 20 pages of Eclipse (3rd book in the Twilight series) – this book has kept me up till the wee hours of the morning for the last week (in a good way that is) AND yes, I watched Twilight and loved it, New Moon not so much. Debating if I’ll go watch Eclipse when it comes out. Who’s kidding who? Of course I will.

My shaky path to self-realization

Posted in meditation with tags on January 6, 2010 by michelleuy

On Tuesday nights, I do a meditation practice with other Torontonians trying to settle their minds. Even with preparation of drinking some caffeine before meditation to stay alert and awake and not eating before my practice, my mind simply wanted to shut off during the 75-minute practice. The mind really just does it’s own thing. Coming back from the holidays, my meditation schedule has been basically non-existent, I try to tame this wondrous thing daily, even if it’s for 5-minutes. I think consistency is better than length. It’s better to make a habit of doing it everyday for 5-minutes, then doing a 30-minute meditation once a month. Off to try again, let’s see how I do today.

My article on avoid fast-forwarding thru life came out today! Take a read if you’d like.

An Interesting Start To 2010

Posted in health and wellness with tags , , , on January 4, 2010 by michelleuy

On New Year’s Day, I found myself sitting in the emergency room at Toronto Western Hospital. I had a bladder infection, and the pain was so severe that I couldn’t wait till the next day to go to a walk-in clinic. Not exactly how I expected to spend my first day of 2010. If you’ve never had a bladder infection, may you never get one, it’s f****** horrible. Imagine the feeling of constantly needing to go pee, and the burning sensation when you do go pee. I’ve only been to the emergency dept. three times in my life. The first time was when I was five, I slid across the room hitting my forehead against the sharp edge of the wall cutting my forehead open. The second time was from a cat bite, yes, you read this right, I broke up a fight between my two cats which resulted in one of them biting me deeply in the arm. That one cost me a week in the hospital. Lesson: Next time you find yourself breaking up a cat fight, don’t. I guess all things do come in threes and hopefully, this is the last time I ever have to go to emergency. In these instances, and when I’m sick, believe it or not, I often think about how lucky I am. The pain I am experiencing is short-term and will go away with the right treatment. Our health is such a valuable thing, it’s shocking how many people don’t take care of themselves. If there is one resolution that I’ve made this year, it’s to give myself extra, special care. That means eating healthy, getting enough sleep, thinking positively, doing lots of yoga, meditating, and then giving myself the things I consider treats more often – massages, facials, osteo treatments.

Speaking of health, I’ve recently been hired to blog on Health and Wellness for That’s Fit, an AOL website dedicated to health and fitness. Check out my first blog of the year by clicking here!
